Kalamazoo sits where two of Michigan's busiest freight routes cross. I-94 carries trucks between Detroit and Chicago, and US-131 runs north to Grand Rapids. When something that big stops moving, it needs a tow company with the weight capacity, the know-how and the patience to do the job safely. That's the work our heavy-duty division is set up for.
What we tow
- Semi-tractors, with or without a trailer
- Straight trucks and box trucks
- School buses, transit buses and coaches
- Class A, B and C motorhomes and large fifth-wheel campers
- Dump trucks, utility trucks and other vocational vehicles
How a heavy tow differs from a car tow
A loaded tractor-trailer can weigh many times more than a pickup, and that changes everything about the job. Before we hook anything, the operator checks the vehicle's weight, whether the trailer is loaded, and whether the driveshaft or axles need disconnecting so the transmission isn't damaged on the way. Air brake lines have to be handled correctly so the brakes release safely. On a road shoulder, the crew also has to set up enough space and warning lights to work beside 70 mph traffic.
None of that is fast, and it shouldn't be rushed. What you get from us is a careful hook-up and a clear plan, so the vehicle reaches the shop without new damage.
For fleets, carriers and RV owners
If you dispatch trucks through southwest Michigan, keep our number with your breakdown contacts. Tell us the unit number, the load status and the receiving shop, and we'll coordinate directly with your driver. For RV owners, we know a motorhome is often a family's home on the road. We'll talk you through what happens to your belongings, your tow vehicle and your pets before anything is moved.
Winter recoveries
Lake-effect bands can turn I-94 between Kalamazoo and Paw Paw into a sheet of ice in minutes. Jackknifed trailers and trucks in the median are part of every Michigan winter. Getting one back onto the pavement takes the right recovery gear and a crew that won't cut corners just to clear the scene. See accident recovery for more on how we handle those calls.
Heavy-Duty Towing questions
Can you tow a loaded trailer?
It depends on the weight and the load. Tell the dispatcher what's in the trailer and roughly how heavy it is, and we'll tell you whether it can move loaded or needs transloading first.
Do you tow motorhomes?
Yes. Class A, B and C motorhomes are part of our heavy-duty work. Let us know about any tow-behind vehicle, too.
Will you work with my fleet's breakdown service?
Yes. Towing Kalamazoo is happy to take dispatch details, unit numbers and purchase-order information directly from your fleet desk.
